Animals · Skill guide
Tame eligible wild creatures and develop a Beastmaster build. Maximum skill: 120 with Power Scrolls; useful alongside Animal Lore and Veterinary.
Set Animal Taming to Up ↑ and leave room under your 720 total skill cap.
| Skill Range | Recommended Activity |
|---|---|
| 0–50 | Buy an optional lesson from an Animal Trainer for 300 gold; it raises this skill directly to 50.0. |
| 50–100 | Tame fresh eligible creatures, moving to harder ones as needed. A pet that damages a valid monster can also provide a passive check when it dies. |
| 100–120 | Continue fresh taming or eligible pet combat after unlocking the higher caps; stay alive, visible and nearby when the monster dies. |
Above 100, use matching Power Scrolls in order: 105, 110, 115, then 120. They unlock caps without granting skill points.
Right-click the teacher NPC, select the skill’s training entry, then give 300 gold. You need a skill cap of at least 50 and room for the entire lesson under your total cap.
Effective Taming must meet the creature’s hard requirement before a fresh attempt can begin; even Ferocious creatures may be tamed at full health. A first-owner attempt starts at 10% there and gains 3 percentage points per skill point, reaching 100% at requirement +30. True tameable companions and mounts start at Level 1 unbonded and become bonded on the real Level 1 → 2 transition at 85 pet XP. A Level 1 death is permanent; Level 2+ bonded pets can be recovered through Veterinary, Magery Resurrection or an Animal Trainer. Passive Pet Combat checks eligible kills, uses a 15-second cooldown per owner and offers a 50% roll for +0.1 on an eligible attempt, independently of the pet’s original taming requirement. Monster difficulty, owner damage and loot rights do not gate this skill check; pet XP keeps its separate contribution check, while Codex XP uses solo or qualified party allocation. Players, controlled creatures, summons, training targets and no-award monsters are excluded. The follower cap remains five; pet level, Codex rank and Pet Mastery are separate progression layers.
